Since we’re on this whole idea of spring right now –
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
—because, we want it in here.
Denise:
We do.
Tracy:
Let’s do some spring DYIs.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
Spring crafting.
Denise:
Well, I noticed your shoes. Your shoes are definitely calling for spring. You have the bright yellow.
Tracy:
Yes, but so do yours.
Denise:
I have the floral. We’re calling in for spring, right.
Tracy:
This is what we want to happen.
Denise:
This is what we need.
Tracy:
You can’t get it in real-life – wear it on your feet.
Denise:
Exactly. Exactly.
Tracy:
That’s what you do.
Denise:
So, we can.
Tracy:
So, let’s talk about flowers.
Denise:
Yes. So, I have all these DYI projects that are easy to do. It’s National Craft Month – this month, March.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
So, I brought in some fun stuff for us to do together. So, these flowers –
Tracy:
So pretty.
Denise:
—if you’re not as talented as Frank Ferragine –
Tracy:
Uh, huh.
Denise:
—then you might opt for tissue paper flowers, like I like to do.
Tracy:
These will stay alive no matter what.
Denise:
Yes. Those are made with tissue paper.
Tracy:
Perfect.
Denise:
And they’re so easy to do. So I’m going to bring you here and we’re getting hands on.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
So, you get about four or five pieces of tissue paper and you just start to accordion-fold them, like this.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
And you just go back and forth.
Tracy:
I love the fact that this– even though sewing is your thing, a lot of these are no-sew projects.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
These are all no-sew projects aren’t they?
Denise:
You know what? These are all no-sew, because it’s really about doing what you’re comfortable with, what you like to do – getting hands on. You know – I’m going to let you take over.
Tracy:
Oh, yeah. Sure.
Denise:
Yeah, so you’re just accordion–
Tracy:
So the accordion fold–
Denise:
Exactly, that’s going back and forth.
Tracy:
Back and forth.
Denise:
And basically we take all of that and that’s what goes together to become our flower. So let’s pretend you’re–
Tracy:
I kind of remember doing a little bit of this in school.
Denise:
Yes! I did this with my grandma when I was young–
Tracy Moore:
Oh.
Denise:
—and I loved it.
Tracy:
See, and you remember that stuff.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
Okay, so step two is?
Denise:
Then you staple it, which you’ve done here.
Tracy:
Yes.
Denise:
Take some wire. So, I’m going to get some wire. Wrap it around. And this is just– this one is actually jewelry wire, but you can use, like, floral wire.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
So, I’m going to wrap this around and then we’re going to cut it and start separating it. So these are really, really easy projects that you can do.
Tracy:
Now, if you want, I mean, I guess the size of the flower is going to depend on how big your paper is, right?
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
You can make really big flowers –
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
—if you’re doing a shower. A bridal shower–
Denise:
Totally.
Tracy:
—baby showers.
Denise:
You can make them super small.
Tracy:
You can make your own décor.
Denise:
Yeah. Make them big for a centerpiece. Exactly. And then what you do is you start opening them up and pealing them back. So you kind of fan it out at the top –
Tracy:
Oh, nice.
Denise:
—like this. And then you start pealing each layer back.
Tracy:
And then you get your little flowers.
Denise:
Yes, you tackle that side. I’ll tackle this side.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
Yeah, so you just peal it back, peal it back, peal it back. Once you’ve done every single layer on both sides. Then you end up with this da-ta-da.
Tracy:
Aww, isn’t that just so pretty.
Denise:
And then-
Tracy:
So nice.
Denise:
Perfect! It’s the perfect look.
Tracy:
Right?
Denise:
So then you can buy an inexpensive silk flower or fake flower. You can cut off the – oh, of course I don’t have my – oh, bop. There we go.
Tracy:
Just rip it off!
Denise:
There we go. And then, you can use this as a stem so you have your built-in flowers.
Tracy:
Look at that.
Denise:
You have your floral tape and it’s so easy to do. Isn’t that beautiful?
Tracy:
It’s gorgeous. I love it.
Denise:
Super easy.
Tracy:
And inexpensive and fun.
Denise:
Inexpensive. I got all these supplies from Walmart. Everything! You don’t have to use expensive supplies in order to get great things.
Tracy:
That’s right.
Denise:
So this one, this is a no-sew clutch. I feel like this totally goes with your outfit right now.
Tracy Moore:
This is so cool!
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
I mean, obviously, you could have made – this is sort of like a little miniature version.
Denise:
This is the miniature version.
Tracy:
Although, people do have clutches this size.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
Just enough for their credit cards–
Denise:
And I have a bigger–
Tracy:
—and a lip gloss.
Denise:
You don’t want to take out too much.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
So, I have a bigger version for you. Basically, you can take like a pleather fabric.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
Cut it out, just using regular scissors, give it some detail on that front edge, and then you fold it up, hole punch it in – I had my husband hole-punching last night, he was putting this together.
Tracy:
So you can see the hole punches there at the side.
Denise:
And then you take this suede cord.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
Just thread it through and then that’s pretty much holding the sides together.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
So, if you put it in a little loop. Like kind of fold it in half–
Tracy:
Yep.
Denise:
—and push that loop through the circles up to the top.
Tracy:
And you got these little– like you got this at a craft store?
Denise:
Everything. This is all from Walmart. This little spool has all this.
Tracy:
Oh, from Walmart?
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
Oh, cool.
Denise:
And you can find them at any craft and supply stores.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
Any, you know, any fabric store. Supply store, you know, they’re– again, you know, there’s just so much that you can do using really basic stuff.
Tracy:
So, I did it the Tracy Moore way, which was totally wrong.
Denise:
This is not quite the way, but it still works.
Tracy:
Okay, but look. The look.
Denise:
It still works! Yeah.
Tracy:
What if I was looking for more of a rustic knot?
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
That’s what I wanted.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
That’s how I wanted it to look!
Denise:
So, we would do these all the way up the sides. Do we have time to do more?
Tracy:
No. Probably not.
Denise:
Okay. So, you do it all up the sides, then –
Tracy:
But, do you know what? We get the hint.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
I mean, this is the way it’s going to look.
Denise:
Then you take magnets, hot glue gun –
Tracy Moore:
Oh!
Denise:
—those magnets on the bottom and on the top.
Tracy:
Right here.
Denise:
And then that’s all, you know; it’s easy and it’s done.
Tracy:
Yeah, and then it opens and it closes.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
And then you actually have a workable piece.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
That’s amazing.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
Use whatever fabric you like, but I like it with the pleather.
Denise:
Exactly. Use something that won’t fray.
Tracy:
Yeah. Very cool.
Denise:
So, now this pillow: super, super cute and this one –
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
—this is all felt circles done with regular pieces of felt fabric.
Tracy:
Nice.
Denise:
Just cut into circles. I had my whole family working. My mom cut all these circles last night.
Tracy:
Oh, good mommy.
Denise:
Then you just hot glue them onto the pillow case.
Tracy:
Good stuff.
Denise:
So you can open up a pillow case; lay them out. What I would suggest is cutting the circles in half first, that way you can lay them around that edge so that you don’t have any white space peeking through.
Tracy:
Oh, okay.
Denise:
And I just played with any pattern. You know, you can really do anything with them.
Tracy:
Right. So–
Denise:
Do we have time for you to do this?
Tracy:
—TV shows – TV shows like Cityline are constantly telling you to switch out your pillows from season to season.
Denise:
Exactly!
Tracy:
Just make them.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
And then they match your décor.
Denise:
You know what? You can put any color in here.
Tracy:
And then it’s really inexpensive.
Denise:
Yes! Yeah, definitely.
