Tracy Moore:
Please welcome Denise Wild. I love the fact that we’ve got DIY gift ideas.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
Some of them you don’t even need to be–
Denise:
No.
Tracy:
—sewing at all.
Denise:
No.
Tracy:
Which makes it really, really easy.
Denise:
I knew you’d be happy with that.
Tracy:
Yeah, I am.
Denise:
So we’re talking about last minute prep. And I wanted to go through some easy DYIs that, if you have someone coming over or you’re going to an unexpected party–
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
—you can just whip something together.
Tracy:
Smart.
Denise:
So, let’s start off with these super cute coffee cozies. These are so easy to do. Just take a sweater and cut off the cuff.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
So, you cut it off. Glue on some fun stuff. I’ve got buttons on this one.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
I’ve got a little reindeer on here. And it’s so easy to do. You can just take a little glue- like a fabric glue, just to prevent that top edge from fraying, but that’s all you do. Get an old sweater, cut off the cuff, and put it on here.
Tracy:
I love that, because then you’re taking a gift that was just going to be sort of an ordinary water bottle–
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
—or mug and giving it that little extra touch.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
I love– I love homemade gifts.
Denise:
Yeah. And you can–
Tracy:
I mean, there’s some thoughtfulness involved. It’s just really beautiful.
Denise:
And you can personalize it.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
You can personalize it. It means more than, you know, a gift card or whatever.
Tracy:
Yeah. Totally.
Denise:
So, it has a bit of your blood, sweat, and tears in it too.
Tracy:
Right. Very easy. So that’s a good one.
Denise:
Hopefully, no blood. Okay, so next, I have some DYI holiday scarves.
Tracy:
Ah!
Denise:
So you have a scarf lying around, or you go to the store and pick up a plain scarf, but you want to make it more exciting, more holiday–
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
—you can just go to a fabric store and pick up some great trims, and these iron on.
Tracy:
Oh, nice.
Denise:
So this beautiful decoration that I did all the way up and down one side of the scarf, I just put– laid this on top, took the iron and laid it down, and it made a really nice decoration.
Tracy:
Oh, that’s awesome.
Denise:
You can do something with hand-sewing, you know, up to you. Whatever you find. Any kind of adornment or trim.
Tracy:
Yes.
Denise:
But a lot of this stuff– I wanted to show you stuff that you can just glue right on. Or iron on.
Tracy:
That’s incredible.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
That is very easy.
Denise:
Yeah. I like this one.
Tracy:
And these are pretty. I love that.
Denise:
Isn’t that cute. It was so easy and it feels like it’s part of the scarf.
Tracy:
Yeah, it does.
Denise:
So, it kind of melts right in. Um, so then–
Tracy:
These ones? These ones.
Denise:
Yeah, let me take you over here. So this is a pair of gloves. You have a pair of gloves lying around or you go out and you buy some fingerless gloves.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
And you want to dress them up; make them personalized. So I did a little hand-embroidery; I wrote “Lady Like” on here.
Tracy:
Yes.
Denise:
It was really, really easy to do. One of these little bits of embroidery thread, they only cost like, thirty – fifty cents. Super, super cheap.
Tracy:
That’s amazing.
Denise:
And you can do it in, you know, a couple minutes. So, if you have fingered gloves, you can take letters–
Tracy:
Um hmm.
Denise:
—and do four letters, one on each of the fingers too.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
So you have a little “Lady Like.” Da, da, da.
Tracy:
Well, you can also just personalize them for your kids’ mittens too.
Denise:
Yes. Yes, that’s important.
Tracy:
You could put their names on there and their initials.
Denise:
Exactly. Instead of the little Jiffy marker inside–
Tracy:
That’s right.
Denise:
—you have this and it looks nicer and–
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
—you know, they’re excited to show it off. You could do little faces.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
You know, little superhero faces.
Tracy:
That’s great.
Denise:
Whatever they like.
Tracy:
I love that because, you know, they lose their gloves like crazy.
Denise:
Yeah, exactly.
Tracy:
You’ve got a little one. You know.
Denise:
So then. I do have a little one and then I am making her this little apron.
Tracy:
Ah!
Denise:
So, I want her to help mommy in the kitchen whenever I am there.
Tracy:
Very cute.
Denise:
But what you can do is just get a square of fabric.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
And cut out little holes right here. I look some extra fabric and cut out these trees. And then you can use spray adhesive. So I’ve got some spray adhesives in the front.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
You just spray the back – they stick right on. And then there are trims that you can even iron on. So we’ll iron this on all the way around. Now this one’s a bit more complicated. I sewed this, of course.
Tracy:
Oh, this is nice.
Denise:
But, you know, this is my personal one, and then I’ll make this one for my daughter. But this one’s big. So we’ve got, you know, stitching all around, but you’re basically going to take this, which irons on–
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
—and do it all the way around. You have the big stuff.
Tracy:
So, you can’t– I don’t know if you can see this; it’s got a cute little skirt.
Denise:
Yeah, a little skirt.
Tracy:
A skirt at the bottom. So, I think this would be–
Denise:
I don’t really cook. I just wear the apron and–
Tracy:
That’s what I would do.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
That’s what I would do. I actually think this is perfect for the Three Chefs, because it’s got the skirt at the bottom, right.
Denise:
Yeah. So, you come home, you throw that on and you put some flour in your hair–
Tracy:
You know I’m making you wear it next.
Denise:
—and you’re like, ‘oh, I slaved all day.’
Tracy:
Yeah, come on in. Come try it on. I think it’s– it’s got your– it’s got you written all over it.
Denise:
I love it!
Tracy:
So pretty.
Denise:
Yeah, cute!
Tracy:
You’re so pretty.
Chef Jason Parsons:
I love it.
Tracy:
Keep it. Keep it. He’ll keep it.
Denise:
I want to do a super quick pillow DYI with you. Let me get this out of the way.
Tracy:
Okay, let’s do it.
Denise:
So, these are just plain toss cushions that you have around the house.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
Or that you bought from the store. And you can take stuff and cut it out, adorn it, put it on just using spray adhesive. This is felt–
Tracy:
How cool.
Denise:
—but, I didn’t glue it yet. But I just cut out the letters and then I’m going to use some spray adhesive to put it on.
Tracy:
This is spray adhesive?
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
That is so cool.
Denise:
This one I just printed off a template from the internet.
Tracy:
That’s awesome.
Denise:
So what I want you to do with this is we’re going to take some ribbon, a plain white pillow–
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
I’m going to cut a strip for you.
Tracy:
What a great way to make your seasonal pillows too.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
Because, you don’t–
Denise:
It’s so easy.
Tracy:
—necessarily want them all–
Denise:
You don’t have to commit to a Christmas pillow.
Tracy:
You don’t have to commit.
Denise:
So what I want you to do is take this around the back.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
And just tie a little knot right here.
Tracy:
Sure.
Denise:
And while you’re doing that, I’m going to cut another one and we’re going to kind of just turn this into–
Tracy:
Does the knot have to be pretty?
Denise:
No, not at all.
Tracy:
Okay, good.
Denise:
Because we’re going to turn it to this side.
Tracy:
Good.
Denise:
So, here. Do another one.
Tracy:
Don’t turn my pillows over.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
That’s what you’ll tell your guests.
Denise:
Exactly. They’re just for show.
Tracy:
Just don’t. Only lean on it.
Denise:
They’re totally just for show. So I’m going to cut this one too.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
We’ll wrap this one around.
Tracy:
I’m going to give it one more knot here.
Denise:
Yeah, we’ll just do a little cross over. And then you have an instant, you know, plain white pillow and now it’s a cute little candy cane.
Tracy:
That is so cute.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
I love that. So you spray adhesive that?
Denise:
You can or you can just leave it.
Tracy:
Or you can just do the bow up?
Denise:
Yeah. Exactly.
Tracy:
Oh, I love that even more. And then you don’t even have to–
Denise:
Just tie it up, put it up against the couch, and hope that no one gets crazy on your sofa.
Tracy:
These are great ideas.
Denise:
Yeah.
Tracy:
I love them. Alright, we’re going to break. We’ve got more coming up. We’re getting you ready last-minute for the holidays.
