Easy DIY Halloween Projects (Video)

Morning Live

I stopped by Morning Live to show Bob Cowan some easy felt DIY projects for Halloween including sewn and no-sew options. These are perfect Halloween ideas even for last minute crafters and parents, you still have enough time to make these this year!

Bob got hands-on, and we had a little fun with the Brother NQ900 sewing machine.

Bob Cowan:
I’m just checking out the coolest sewing machine in the world! This has actually been a great addition to Morning Live. Earlier we had Elvis Stojko on, one of Canada’s greatest skaters, and now Denise Wild, one of Canada’s greatest sewers.

Denise Wild:
I should have Elvis sewing with us!

Bob:
Yeah, we could have done that, yeah.

Denise:
Yeah.

Bob:
But you’re quite prolific. You know from blogs, magazines, and appearances, and we love to have you on Morning Live, because you’re such a sewing expert. But you’re going to save us some money for Halloween too?

Denise:
Yes. I am, because you can make your own costumes. You can make your own décor items with a trip to the fabric store. I know that we’re at Len’s Mill this morning. So you hit up your local fabric store. Pick up some great supplies, and with a sewing machine, you can–

Bob:
Bingo, bango!

Denise:
–make all these wonderful things happen.

Bob:
Can we do it on live TV?

Denise:
Yes.

Bob:
Okay, let’s–

Denise:
You are going to do it.

Bob:
No. I’m not! Are you serious?

Denise:
I am not joking.

Bob:
I am not a strong sewer.

Denise:
I am not joking, but that’s one of the great things about these machines. So, this is a Brother NQ900 Sewing Machine. It’s part of their Q-Series. Ta-ta-ta-da!

Bob:
I just want to buy it right now, because that looks so cool.

Denise:
It’s super fancy. So it has a lot of incredible stitches up here, but it also has some great features for beginners like this speed control. So I’ll keep it nice and slow for you.

Bob:
Thank you.

Denise:
It has a start/stop button so you don’t even need the foot pedal and, because we have this raised table, the foot pedal wouldn’t even reach the ground. So you’re going to stand–

Bob:
Okay.

Denise:
–and sew, and talk at the same time.

Bob:
So this is like a big computer program on board?

Denise:
Yeah, you know? I compare it to a microwave or a digital camera. It’s more like a point-and-shoot.

Bob:
Right.

Denise:
It does everything for you. It programs everything so you can just touch the buttons–

Bob:
Yeah.

Denise:
–and it will put in your proper settings or you can override it.

Bob:
So the price range of this; it would be like the price of what you’d spend on a big screen TV, but it’s an investment that you’d have around forever.

Denise:
Exactly. These sewing machines are lasting a lifetime.

Bob:
Yeah.

Denise:
I always say, you know, people shouldn’t be intimidated by the LCD screen. You know, it just makes everything easier for you.

Bob:
And this does everything; like it will do like denim and like tough fabrics?

Denise:
Oh, everything. Yeah, it will sew thick fabrics, thin fabrics, any garments, any home décor items. Anything you want.

Bob:
Okay.

Denise:
Yeah.

Bob:
Neat.

Denise:
Ready?

Bob:
Alright, okay, and Halloween costumes?

Denise:
And Halloween costumes. So we’re working with felt, which is a great fabric for beginners; it doesn’t fray. And one of the features that I want to show off on this machine; so we’re used to machines sewing going forward and backward, but this one actually goes side-to-side. So, I’m using black thread so that we can all examine your stitching and see how perfect you’re doing. I’m just going to press the button.

Bob:
Just tell me what button to push!

Denise:
Let’s push this button over here. We’re going to do stitch number ninety-four.

Bob:
Ah, I was going to suggest that.

Denise:
I think that’s perfect. Um, sorry, ninety-three. Let’s do ninety-three; that’s our sideways sewing feature. Ninety-three and then you just press this green button back here and it will start sewing for you. Oops! And it won’t.

Bob:
I’m so sorry!

Denise:
So, I think, because we are going even too slow–

Bob:
That was the problem.

Denise:
The machine – there we go. Hold on one second. Let me change out the–

Bob:
You hit the Bob setting. That was the–

Denise:
Okay, let’s go with number ninety-four. Ninety-four, okay. And then we’ll go. And we’ll go a little bit faster here.

Bob:
There we go.

Denise:
And the machine will, actually, sew sideways. So it is going across this way.

Bob:
Just for fun, can we put it to the ridiculously fast speed?

Denise:
Oh, yes.

Bob:
Just–

Denise:
You bet.

Bob:
Okay.

Denise:
Okay, here. Slide this one over like that.

Bob:
Because, we’ve got a lot of costumes to make.

Denise:
So this is going sideways.

Bob:
Yeah.

Denise:
So let’s go forward on this.

Bob:
Uh, huh.

Denise:
And do-to-do-to-do. We can do just our regular straight stitch.

Bob:
Okay.

Denise:
And go forward.

Bob:
Okay.

Denise:
Okay, so the great thing about these machines, I can show you different projects too that we’re doing.

Bob:
Oh, that’s going quite nicely now.

Denise:
So, yeah.

Bob:
Yeah.

Denise:
We’ll pretend that this is going nicely done.

Bob:
But it is neat, because you can see the patterns up here and I mean you can just– the sky’s the limit in terms of the patterns that you can do.

Denise:
It is. So we had a little bit of a– little bit of an issue at the beginning.

Bob:
Well, again, that was totally my fault. You did that while I was screwing up this.

Denise:
Yeah. So what um – if you choose fabrics that are easy to work with, like felt, you can just cut them out; you don’t have to worry about frayed edges. I’ve got some other décor items that you can do as well. So you’re picking up felt, sew it onto ribbon to create a beautiful bunting.

Bob:
Mmm hmm.

Denise:
You can pick up some sheer fabrics here to create your little ghosts too–

Bob:
Right.

Denise:
–so with the sewing machine.

Bob:
Put some faces on them or–

Denise:
Exactly. And even if you just have a glue gun, you can do something like these little mummy glasses right here. You’re just taking nylon webbing–

Bob:
And now we’re inspired.

Denise:
–and gluing them onto here.

Bob:
Okay. Thank you so much, Denise Wild.

Denise:
Thank you.

Bob:
You got me sewing!

Denise:
I did. I am so glad.
