Lianne Laing:
Getting fresh new duds and all that back-to-school stuff was a ton of fun, but it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. In fact, there are easy ways to customize your supplies and your clothes all on your own. So here to help us out, we’ve got some amazing things with sewing and DIY expert Denise Wild. I’m so happy to have you here.
Denise Wild:
Thank you for having me.
Lianne:
Welcome to the city. She has never been to Ottawa, so-
Denise:
I am embarrassed to say; I’m a bad Canadian.
Lianne:
No!
Denise:
But I’m so happy to be here.
Lianne:
You’ve done it. You’ve done it in your lifetime. You’re here.
Denise:
Yes.
Lianne:
I loved coming and checking out this table.
Denise:
Yeah.
Lianne:
I was so inspired. There are so many little projects that you can do. And great for the kids. And anyone of all ages.
Denise:
Exactly. Anyone of all ages. Like you said, ‘your kids.’ I have a daughter who’s two. She wants to get hands-on and get messy with everything too. But these are just a great way to take your regular back-to-school supplies and dress them up. So that when you are, you know, heading off to school or if you’re back to work, you are not stuck in the drab task, you know, over and over again. You’re doing something fun and you have great supplies to display.
Lianne:
This is going to look great for any kid’s desk. Anything at school–
Denise:
Right.
Lianne:
–but, honestly, for anyone who wants to spice up and have some fun–
Denise:
Exactly!
Lianne:
–with their own desk. This is a great way to dress up your cubical. Okay, so let’s just start with the plain.
Denise:
Okay, let’s just start.
Lianne:
You’ve got– you’ve got your paperclips.
Denise:
Exactly. So these are binder clips that you buy. Regular old binder clips, but you can take washi tape. Now have you– I don’t know if you’ve heard of this? But it’s like a very thin masking tape. It comes in all different colours. All different patterns. And Scotch has a lot of great varieties to it, so you can just take that, cut it–
Lianne:
Mmm hmm.
Denise:
–and cover your regular binder clips. So you all the sudden have this gorgeous display and something completely unique.
Lianne:
Okay. You’ve got them in glitter. You’ve got them in stripes. This is just so much fun.
Denise:
Exactly.
Lianne:
And just a little–
Denise:
Easy to do; scissors, washi tape, and you’re done.
Lianne:
Okay, nice.
Denise:
So–
Lianne:
Then you’ve done something nice over here–
Denise:
Exactly.
Lianne:
–glue sticks?
Denise:
A regular glue stick. Why would you want to carry a regular glue stick at school? You can take your standard coloured paper.
Lianne:
Mmm hmm.
Denise:
And this is just regular pack of printer paper; and then dress it up by wrapping it around, cutting it in different shapes, and then gluing it down the back. So, again, this is a very, very easy project to do and it looks so nice. It looks interesting. Everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, wow. I love that.’
Lianne:
Okay. I love this for anyone who’s going to be at their desk and going to need to put some colours and pens–
Denise:
Yes.
Lianne:
–or anything in. This is my favorite right now.
Denise:
Okay. So this one you are going to– I’m going to have you get busy with this.
Lianne:
Okay.
Denise:
So this is just regular modeling clay. And after it’s done, you can paint it if you want or you can just leave it, but what we’re doing is we’re shaping it into whatever shape you want. You can use a knife to cut it. And then you can put your markers inside. You can put your pens inside. You can do individual little characters. It’s just really, you know, taking your regular supplies and doing fun things to them. It is a great way to do it. So let’s have you– do you want to put that down on the ground?
Lianne:
Yeah.
Denise:
Let’s shape it around. And this modeling clay – all of these school supplies are from grandandtoy.com. You can order online so that, you know, you’re in the comfort of your home. Who wants to go outside when it’s so hot out? Everything’s delivered right to your door. And if you’re already are away at school–
Lianne:
Mmm hmm.
Denise:
–you can have it shipped straight to your dorm.
Lianne:
Okay. Well these are some fun ideas. I don’t think I ever would have thought of doing clay and then creating something.
Denise:
Exactly.
Lianne:
I’m going to make a nice little heart.
Denise:
Love that.
Lianne:
Do you like this idea? Okay.
Denise:
See, you’re crafty.
Lianne:
Yeah, I can figure something out. Hold on. I’m going to make a nice little– okay, so there’s my heart. Okay, look at this!
Denise:
I love it!
Lianne:
Okay, and now I’m just going to stick in–
Denise:
Exactly. So take your supplies – and again, craft supplies, school supplies; grandandtoy.com, and it delivers right to you so you don’t have to go anywhere.
Lianne:
Oh my God. I’m so excited by all of this.
Denise:
You stay at home and order all of your fun stuff, and it will show up.
Lianne:
Okay. I’ll keep doing this.
Denise:
Okay, that’s a talent.
Lianne:
You can keep going; there’s more projects.
Denise:
I love that. Okay, so next, again, you want to do something really fun. You want to do something with the kids and get hands on. This is a no sew pencil roll. So you’re just taking pre-cut felt fabric and giving it a cut out, putting some slices in it. You can glue-gun a button. You can glue gun a little bit of elastic.
Lianne:
Mmm hmm.
Denise:
And then instantly, you know, everyone else has a regular store-bought pencil case and you have this gorgeous roll up.
Lianne:
That’s so cute!
Denise:
Ta-da! Yeah, super cute.
Lianne:
Love it!
Denise:
And then of course, all of your different pencils; all of that inside.
Lianne:
Okay.
Denise:
Now, let’s talk about these gorgeous paper clips. So you’re taking your regular paper clips and these are, you know – fun, colourful ones that I bought at Walmart, but you can just get regular ones if you want; gold, silver. And then grab a bunch of ribbons; very inexpensive supplies. Tie them around. Make little bows. Do little shapes. Incorporate different colours. And then glue them on and that’s it.
Lianne:
You were saying, ‘the glue gun is your friend.’
Denise:
The glue gun is your friend here.
Lianne:
You said that with almost everything. Okay, and then–
Denise:
Yes.
Lianne:
–that really came into effect for this vase.
Denise:
Exactly, so here. This is a great teacher gift or, like you said, you know, ‘dressing up your own personal works space.’ You’re back to school. You’ve got all of your back-to-school supplies. You went to Walmart. Picked everything up. And you have these crayons. I’m having you–
Lianne:
Oh, gosh.
Denise:
–get hands-on–
Lianne:
Okay.
Denise:
–with this. So, we’re going to take – maybe the best way is for you to kind of go diddle-diddle-diddle–
Lianne:
Okay.
Denise:
–on the side. And then we’ll glue the crayons on.
Lianne:
Like this?
Denise:
Yes. Exactly.
Lianne:
Okay. I’m going to give it–
Denise:
Give it more space.
Lianne:
I’ll give it more space.
Denise:
Yeah.
Lianne:
I’m not used to doing– okay, I see.
Denise:
The pressure.
Lianne:
No. It’s okay.
Denise:
We want to see how it turns out. So, you know–
Lianne:
This is what it’s going to turn out like.
Denise:
Exactly. It’s such a good gift. It’s a fun craft to do at home with your kids. And then, you know, you have your supplies that look so much better than everyone else’s.
Lianne:
Okay.
Denise:
Okay, I’ll get this.
Lianne:
There’s truly– as you’re working on this, I’ll just show this, because this was fun for the family, everyone’s got their Post-it and then you make this board.
Denise:
Exactly. So I love this. It’s kind of like a family message center. You have your Post-its, but you need to relay messages to each–
Lianne:
Mmm hmm.
Denise:
–member of the family. This, again, Washi Tape, a regular frame; use a glue gun to put on these Post-it note packs. These are from their Miami Collection. But this way you have like a family message center. Like you said, your ‘Post-its are everywhere.’ You need them for being organized for back to school. And then there is this great dry erase roll.
Lianne:
Yeah.
Denise:
So this is a paper. You can stick it anywhere. I’ve created this dry erase book. Use a Sharpie to draw on it and then your kids can use dry erase.
Lianne:
I love this. People can find more information, because you’ve got so many great ideas at DeniseWild.com. Once again, DeniseWild.com. I’m was having– this is awesome.
Denise:
Thank you.
