Tracy Moore:
For all of our DIY-doers out there, if you are the sort of person that has all of these discarded buttons and you think to yourself, ‘What am I going to do with all of these?’ We’ve got a great project for you.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
So, Denise, many different projects–
Denise Wild:
Many–
Tracy:
–you can do.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
Using buttons.
Denise:
Using buttons. You have that stash. You know, your shirt comes with a button. You put the button in a jar.
Tracy:
Yes.
Denise:
Or you inherited that button jar; from your mom, from your grandma.
Tracy:
Um, hum.
Denise:
What do you do with them? Well, I have some great crafty ideas. And I’m having you start here.
Tracy:
So, we’re going to start with this necklace?
Denise:
Exactly. So we’re talking about–
Tracy:
Isn’t that cute.
Denise:
–crafts that you can wear with the necklace, and this is all things that you can just find.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
So, I have a little vintage necklace cut in half and a piece of felt. So I’ll have you choose some buttons and just hot glue the buttons onto the felt.
Tracy:
Okay, perfect. I want to pick like a color pallet here.
Denise:
Oh, yes. It’s all about the planning.
Tracy:
I’ll do–
Denise:
It’s all about the planning.
Tracy:
I’ll do the pearls and the beiges, because that’s so adventurous. I mean have you ever looked at how expensive is that vintage stuff?
Denise:
I love the vintage buttons.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
And, again, these are the ones that you find that your grandma has been collecting for so long. You inherit this big jar of buttons. What are you going to do with them?
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
So we’re making them beautiful. And this is such an easy project. All these ones just glue gun.
Tracy:
And all you had to do was, you cut out this little thing so that I have something to glue the buttons onto?
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
Just a little bit of felt.
Denise:
Any shape of felt. You’ll glue the button quick before it dries.
Tracy:
Oh, okay. I got it.
Denise:
No talking. Just gluing.
Tracy:
Focus, Tracy, focus! And they can overlap a little bit right?
Denise:
They can overlap. So the best way to do this is to create kind of a base, with all the buttons, and then layer them on overtop and you’ll see that gives them added dimension.
Tracy:
Oh, man! I shouldn’t have put that one on so soon.
Denise:
Oh, that’s okay. You can tuck the other one underneath.
Tracy:
Alright.
Denise:
So felt is your key thing – well, felt and glue. That’s kind of the secret ingredients here. You can buy felt on the roll at the fabric store; cut out different shapes. I’ve put one on a purse, in front here. So that’s the little flower. So, again, you’re taking buttons that you already have, putting them onto felt–
Tracy:
Isn’t that pretty.
Denise:
–and then you can sew it, you can hot glue it onto existing things. A big bag like that. A little clutch. Anything like that.
Tracy:
It personalizes it. So we’ve talked about this before, on Fashion Friday, how everyone’s doing these little badges and–
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
–patches.
Denise:
Exactly.
Tracy:
But you can actually make your own.
Denise:
You can make your own.
Tracy:
And then you don’t have to go and buy one.
Denise:
Right.
Tracy:
You can just make your own.
Denise:
You can even pin– have a pin on the back so you can change it from one bag to the next.
Tracy:
Yeah. A little brooch, right?
Denise:
Yep. Keep gluing these.
Tracy:
Okay, I’m going to continue to make my necklace and you show us the next piece of art.
Denise:
So the other thing you can do is a cute little keychain like this. And, again, these are buttons that you have; either vintage buttons or you can go to the craft store or dollar store and pick up an assortment of buttons. Use the little jump rings and then your keychain here. So you’re just using some needle-nose pliers to put the rings through the buttons.
Tracy:
Oh, cute.
Denise:
And then you have this beautiful– you know, you can turn that into an earring or use it as a–
Tracy:
They would look good actually.
Denise:
–keychain.
Tracy:
That’s the sort of thing my kids would be into. They’re obsessed with key chains.
Denise:
Perfect! So you know what?
Tracy:
Love it.
Denise:
And this kind of– everything can work as a great gift. If you know a crafter–
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
–and or, you know, it’s perfect to go to somebody’s house and bring them something great.
Tracy:
Hey, can I another– do you have any more of that glue handy?
Denise:
Yes. Oh, you need more.
Tracy:
Of course she does, because she’s a crafty woman.
Denise:
It’s hiding. You can have things that you wear. Things that you carry. And then, there’s home décor. So you can take your buttons–
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
–and make something extra fancy things. Here a little animal.
Tracy:
That’s good.
Denise:
Have a little silhouette of an animal. Again, put your layers of buttons. You can do it directly on felt and then put it in a little frame. This is a great gift for someone or–
Tracy:
Let me show them what this looks like.
Denise:
–a baby.
Tracy:
So this is– you always have the little model here.
Denise:
Exactly, yeah.
Tracy:
And then you just fill the buttons in the space.
Denise:
Fill the buttons in.
Tracy:
And you can make your own art. You can get a really inexpensive frame to put that in.
Denise:
Yes.
Tracy:
I think that’s really so gorgeous.
Denise:
Yes. And on your pillow too. So this one isn’t quite finished, because I thought we could– I could show how this is done.
Tracy:
Okay.
Denise:
But, again, cut out a letter. You’re using felt as a base. Glue on your buttons on overtop. Start them– you know, kind of do a flat base and then layer them on to fill in all the gaps.
Tracy:
Right.
Denise:
You have a regular home pillow and now you dress it up with this. So you can either spray adhesive to have it there temporarily.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
You know, so you can change it in and out. Or you can hand sew it on. And really quickly–
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
–a tray. So, these ones aren’t glued in, but you could glue them in you so want.
Tracy:
Oh!
Denise:
But just take all your beautiful vintage buttons, scatter them down–
Tracy:
I’m going to try and tip it over–
Denise:
–they look so beautiful.
Tracy:
–so you can see it, without ruining everything.
Denise:
If you want to–
Tracy:
Can you see that, everybody?
Denise:
–get some glass. Have a glass cut to put over top.
Tracy:
So it’s all buttons.
Denise:
You could have little, you know; serve your drinks on this beautiful button tray.
Tracy:
That’s a great idea.
Denise:
Right.
Tracy:
I thought this was your organizer. I was like, ‘No, no, no. That’s a project.’
Denise:
No. It’s supposed to be like that.
Tracy:
Very nice. Okay, now, my necklace is almost done.
Denise:
I love that.
Tracy:
And it’s glued to the paper. Come in here Tiffany and Devan.
Denise:
She glued it to the paper.
Tracy:
I really went to town with it.
Denise:
Okay.
Tracy:
Yeah, so it’s got a purple back there. I made a little bit of a necklace there.
Tiffany Pratt:
Really pretty.
Denise:
You’ll just glue it.
Tracy:
I’m just going to put that there.
Tiffany:
Really pretty.
Denise:
You just put the necklace on.
Tracy:
Yeah.
Denise:
A little bit of the felt on the back and there you go.
Tracy:
And then you’re done. Great DIY projects, Denise.
Denise:
Yes.
Tiffany:
Look at those colors.
Tracy:
You can do a lot with a little glue stick – I know. Do you want to pick out all the pink ones?
Tiffany:
All day.
Tracy:
All day long. Thanks for joining us today on Cityline. Have a good one. Get those glue guns out. See you tomorrow.
