Carolyn Mackenzie:
Are you looking for some more personal Father’s Day gift ideas? Well, sewing and craft expert Denise Wild is here with some creative DIY options, and they look amazing.

Denise Wild:
Right, they’re fun. Something that’s handmade always feels a little bit more special than something that’s bought at the store, so…

Carolyn:
Yeah.

Jeff McArthur:
It is a little more personal. It’s something dad will remember for years to come.

Denise:
Exactly.

Jeff:
So, okay.

Denise:
Exactly.

Jeff:
You’re going to put us to work, Denise?

Denise:
I am. It looks like you guys haven’t been crafting yet this morning, so–

Carolyn:
Because we have no glue on our hands?

Denise:
–we’re going to get hands-on.

Carolyn:
Yes. You’re right.

Denise:
Okay, so–

Jeff:
We have been crafting a broadcast–

Denise:
Yes, exactly.

Jeff:
–of award winning portions– proportions.

Denise:
I know.

Jeff:
So, okay.

Denise:
Well, now it’s time to work with paint.

Jeff:
Okay.

Denise:
And Mod Podge.

Carolyn:
Okay.

Denise:
So I’ve got some great, inexpensive projects. I’ll have you working on the Jeff mug here.

Carolyn:
Okay.

Denise:
Now this is just a ceramic mug with special paints. You can put paint overtop of sticky letters that I’ve just put on here.

Carolyn:
Okay, got it.

Denise:
And then you bake it in the oven–

Carolyn:
So I paint it on?

Denise:
–and then it bakes on. Exactly.

Carolyn:
Okay.

Denise:
So you’re just going to paint all over there. Get all crazy.

Carolyn:
Okay.

Denise:
You can mix up the different colors. Once you’re finished with that, we’ll peel off the stickers, bake it in the oven–

Jeff:
Okay.

Denise:
–and then it’s dishwasher safe, microwave safe. You can have it say any name you want and personalize it.

Jeff:
I’ve never asked anybody this, during a craft segment before, but how long do I cook this for–

Denise:
Exactly.

Carolyn:
Denise–

Jeff:
–half an hour at three-fifty? Or something.

Denise:
Exactly. Exactly it’s the standard.

Jeff:
Yeah.

Carolyn:
–sorry. I don’t know. Did I miss? Is this a special kind of paint?

Denise:
Yes. So this is specific for a ceramic mug.

Carolyn:
Yeah.

Denise:
You’re just painting this on top. We bake it on. It stays on. I’m going to get–

Carolyn:
Yeah.

Denise:
–Jeff to get hands on with this.

Jeff:
Okay, what are we working on here, Denise.

Denise:
So these are DIY coasters. You can take a photograph–

Jeff:
Oh, okay.

Denise:
–you can take an image from a magazine.

Jeff:
Yeah.

Denise:
Mog Podge is kind of like an adhesive, sealant–

Jeff:
Um, hum.

Denise:
–all purpose thing. You’re going to take a sponge brush, put a little bit of the Mod Podge on the back of the photo.

Jeff:
Okay.

Denise:
Use that to stick it onto the ceramic tile, and then you’ll put a coat of the Mod Podge on top of that to seal it all in. When you’re finished, we can put these little tabs on underneath – the cork tabs underneath – and then you have a little customized coaster. So these are just great–

Carolyn:
Oh!

Denise:
–gifts to give to any, you know, father figure in your life for Father’s Day.

Jeff:
Yeah, and then again, it’s very personalized, right.

Denise:
Yes. You have to put the Mod Podge on top to–

Carolyn:
Seal it up.

Denise:
–seal it all in.

Jeff:
Seal it up? Okay.

Denise:
Exactly.

Carolyn:
Right, okay.

Denise:
Once you’re finished, we’ll spray it on and then the little tabs will–

Jeff:
So I just do it like this? Little action.

Denise:
Exactly. Just keep going back and forth.

Carolyn:
Great ideas!

Denise:
So, I have another really fun one. This is aluminum foil art. I bet you’ve never heard that before?

Carolyn:
No.

Denise:
But, it’s really fun. You take some aluminum foil. You draw on it using Sharpies.

Jeff:
Um, hum.

Denise:
You can’t do it on a hard surface, because you want it to have kind of that 3D embossed feel.

Jeff:
Okay.

Denise:
So I just put a little felt underneath it. Then you put this down, draw overtop of it. Super easy. You can take this aluminum art and put it on a card, put it in a photo frame – whatever you’d like to do. Very inexpensive. This will cost you pennies.

Jeff:
Yeah, and it’s eye popping too. Obviously, I mean, it’s got–

Denise:
Exactly!

Jeff:
–that real glittery background too.

Denise:
Exactly. And the embossed detail.

Jeff:
Yeah.

Carolyn:
Okay, so after I wrap the lasagna, I take off the tin foil –

Denise:
Exactly.

Carolyn:
–and then I go, “let’s do art!”

Denise:
Exactly. And look for the Great Value product, because it’s the same everyday essentials. Same styrofoam plates I’m using, but it cost you a little bit less, same quality.

Jeff:
Okay, what do–

Denise:
Then–

Jeff:
–we got going on in the frames here?

Denise:
–let’s talk about photo gifts.

Jeff:
Um, hum.

Carolyn:
Oh.

Denise:
So, photo gifts are great. You know we have all these photos on our phone–

Jeff:
Um, hum.

Denise:
–but we need to get them out. Have people – other people enjoying them. So, if you buy a shadowbox frame, you can take a photo, put in a memory. You know, any kind of awards, a vacation, tickets from a concert –

Jeff:
Um, hum.

Denise:
–put that inside. You’re taking your memories, taking your photos, putting them in. It’s a great gift for dad or anyone who just wants to celebrate the day.

Carolyn:
I love it. It’s amazing.

Denise:
Yeah.

Jeff:
Speaking of amazing, see what you’re doing with my mug there. That’s–

Carolyn:
This is–

Jeff:
–that’s amazing work right there.

Denise:
Oh! Actually, I like that!

Carolyn:
Look, look. Where are we–

Jeff:
There.

Carolyn:
–there, Jeff.

Denise:
And the fingerprints.

Carolyn:
And I tried to write something, but it didn’t turn out. So then I’m like–

Jeff:
Some great DIY Father’s Day gifts. Denise Wild, great to see you.

Carolyn:
So good.

Denise:
Thank you.

Jeff:
Thanks so much this morning.
