Annette Hamm:
If your kids aren’t excited about heading back to school, here’s a way to kind of nudge them along. Get them involved in making their new school supplies and clothes; kind of customized on their own. Craft expert Denise Wild joins us. I love these ideas. I’m like, ‘Oh, my crafting nerdy-ness is on!’

Denise Wild:
Yes. Well, you’ve got one last long weekend before school starts and you want to send the kids back to school, like you said, with supplies that they feel are personalized.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
And so I’m going to customize that back to school experience with some hands-on crafts and–

Annette:
Let’s start out with the lunch bag.

Denise:
–you are going to get hands-on.

Annette:
Yes.

Denise:
So this is a watercolour lunch bag that I got right here. And you can do this with a spray bottle with any lunch bag that you have. Make sure that it’s plain, because–

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
–you’re adding lots of colours.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
What we’ll do first is we’ll start by spraying it with water. So give it a little bit of spray.

Annette:
Like that?

Denise:
Exactly. So that’s just to kind of to allow the colours to melt together. And then we have these awesome fabric makers.

Annette:
Wonderful.

Denise:
So you do pink; I’ll do blue.

Annette:
I’ll just do.

Denise:
And just go all over. Get crazy. They could write their names. They can do a little thing – little stars. You can just kind of like blob it up. And then, what you do next is we spray it again. And then we just kind of rub it in. I think I’ve got some paper towels down here.

Annette:
Okay. Just a light spray.

Denise:
And you’re kind of wanting everything to like blend in.

Annette:
All blend in together.

Denise:
Yeah, exactly. So it gives you like this nice watercolour effect.

Annette:
This is what we’d be doing if kids wrote on there with markers.

Denise:
Yeah, totally.

Annette:
You’d be cleaning if off.

Denise:
This way it’s purposeful.

Annette:
But here we’re just cleaning it a little bit.

Denise:
It’s purposeful. So with the water it allows everything to kind of blend in and then it gives you that nice watercolour effect.

Annette:
Oh, okay. So just kind of play with it a little bit then to see?

Denise:
Yeah, exactly.

Annette:
Ah, that looks better.

Denise:
The finished product; once it’s done, you can toss it in the dryer – it helps seal everything in – or you can iron it too. And then –

Annette:
Okay. So this isn’t something you want to be doing the night before school starts?

Denise:
Right, no. But it does– it is very quick to do and very inexpensive. So I’ve got these craft supplies; Walmart has your back-to-school supplies–

Annette:
Yep.

Denise:
–your craft supplies –

Annette:
And your markers and stuff.

Denise:
Everything at good price points are all so reasonable. This lunchbox to make is only twenty dollars total, including the lunchbox and the paint markers. And we’re going to move on – oh, I can show you these ones too.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
So, this is a super fun pop bottle zippered case. So you take–

Annette:
And there’s no sewing.

Denise:
Yeah. Exactly, it’s a zipper without sewing. So you take two pop bottles, use a pair of scissors to cut them apart–

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
–and then you use–

Annette:
So mom or dad should do that?

Denise:
Exactly. Use a hot glue gun to glue a zipper around it. You can cut the zipper to size. Glue it around the outside or the inside. You do one side at a time and then you have these beautiful little cases. And, again, this is all from Walmart.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
Their price points are amazing, especially their Great Value brand.

Annette:
And I love how you don’t have to worry about matching, you know, ‘Oh, how big of a zipper do I need to buy for this?’ because, I just watched you. You just cut them.

Denise:
We just cut it.

Annette:
Yeah.

Denise:
So, I was using a pair of scissors. I just cut off the end. I made sure that it overlaps on that one side, but then you’re good to go and everything is good.

Annette:
That’s really a neat idea.

Denise:
Isn’t it cute.

Annette:
I love that.

Denise:
So then your kids are going to school and they have something that’s fun.

Annette:
And you’ve got all different kind of sizes.

Denise:
Yep. Super easy.

Annette:
They’re neat for just putting on their desk too.

Denise:
Exactly. Exactly. So, back-to-school means organization.

Annette:
Um, hum.

Denise:
And what better way to keep organized than all your Post-it notes? So, you want to stay on top of everything; schedules, activities, calendars, goals. So, I’ve got two great projects.

Annette:
I’d love to open up this book.

Denise:
I know.

Annette:
Because, it’s like–

Denise:
I know.

Annette:
–waaa!

Denise:
So, this, I just took a regular binder. I took some great different colours of Post-it notes, cut them up in fun shapes, used a Mod Pogde over top of it – that helps seal it in place.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
And then inside, da-da-ta! So, this, you have all these notes. You want to keep everything organized. Now this becomes your own personal organizer collection.

Annette:
Okay, and how did you stick them on there?

Denise:
So, these are glued in.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
So, this is what I’m going to get you to do.

Annette:
Alright.

Denise:
So, using this hot glue gun.

Annette:
Yep.

Denise:
I’ve got pink. Extra special. So we’re going to take from the Post-it Miami Collection; super fun brights and–

Annette:
So, this just goes on the back?

Denise:
Just glue gun all over the back of it and then we’ll stick them right in place.

Annette:
Okay. I’ll give you that.

Denise:
Okay. And I’ll do this one.

Annette:
Which way?

Denise:
So, go down that way. Keep your sticky side up to the top. Yep.

Annette:
Sticky side on the top.

Denise:
So you have – you know, there are just so many things that you’re– you need to stay on top of and you need to stay organized with, and this way, the whole family can get involved in making this, but then everyone knows where to find your Post-it notes.

Annette:
Right. And do you– in your family, does each family member have their own colour?

Denise:
Well, yeah. So this one–

Annette:
Or is it for like activities?

Denise:
Exactly.

Annette:
Like maybe practice is one colour? And–

Denise:
Right. Yeah, exactly. You want to have the kids feel like they’re in control of their own schedules. So Post-it also has this great family calendar along with different tabs. Everyone can have a different colour. You can also take a regular clipboard. This clipboard is only one dollar; add in some letters. This week, this is the things to do. You can change it up so it’s goals. So it’s your menu and then use your Post-its to put them on, and this kind of gives the kids something exciting to look forward to. If you’re menu-planning, it helps break everything down easier.

Annette:
That’s a great idea. And then again–

Denise:
It’s beautiful. It’s customized. I just used some Washi Tape over here and then your Post-it Notes on there.

Annette:
Okay. We have a minute left, but you’re going to show an amazing trick with–

Denise:
Yes.

Annette:
I love these new Washi Tapes.

Denise:
Yes.

Annette:
Because if you’ve never seen it, it’s the– you know, you think it’s just regular Scotch Tape, but it’s–

Denise:
It’s–

Annette:
–oh, it’s so much more.

Denise:
Exactly. So these are Scotch Expressions Washi Tapes. And they’re basically very thin–

Annette:
Oh, where to find the start?

Denise:
I know, this is a challenge. This is the biggest challenge with our eyes. So, they’re basically kind of a fine masking tape. They come in amazing colours. You just take a regular pencil and then you wrap it in the tape. And then you have a beautiful customized pencil for school.

Annette:
Okay, so I found the end of mine.

Denise:
Perfect, yes!

Annette:
Why don’t you show how–

Denise:
Okay.

Annette:
–how it’s done then? We’ve got thirty seconds.

Denise:
Okay. So, we’ll start off– this one isn’t sharpened yet, but usually you would start it just above the area that’s sharpened. So, let’s pretend–

Annette:
Right.

Denise:
–that it’s sharpened like this. Do one that goes across horizontally. And then, you take it, and just at an angle and start wrapping it around.

Annette:
Oh!

Denise:
Yeah.

Annette:
That’s why I gave it to you, because I’m like, ‘I have no idea how to start this.’

Denise:
Yeah. Okay. Now you’ll just continue.

Annette:
Okay.

Denise:
So you’ll just wrap it around. Again, these Scotch Expression Tapes: very easy to use. It’s such a simple project and your kids will love doing it.

Annette:
Oh, I love this.

Denise:
And then they’ll go to school with these cool pencils. And then no one will steal their pencil.

Annette:
And it sharpens easily too, right?

Denise:
Oh, yes!

Annette:
Because–

Denise:
Exactly.

Annette:
–the tape is really, really thin.

Denise:
Exactly.

Annette:
Some great ideas here.

Denise:
Yeah.

Annette:
So, we’ll get the link up on our website to your website, which just has even more great ideas–

Denise:
Yeah.

Annette:
–and you’re social media and stuff. It’s so much fun when you come in.

Denise:
Oh, I love being here.

Annette:
Thanks, Denise.

Denise:
Thank you.

Annette:
And we’re going to be back with more Morning Live right after this. I’m just going to finish my pencil.
